Have you ever wondered how your brain works? Or have you ever asked yourself questions such as the reason for our fear of the dark, the mechanism behind our five senses or the mysteries surrounding our dreams? Then join us from March 11th to 17th, 2024 for another fascinating edition of Brain Week!
In this 26th edition, Inserm is pleased to once again be one of the partners of Brain Week and help you uncover the fascinating secrets of neuroscientific research. Coordinated by the Neuroscientific Society and supported by the Dana FoundationThis international event offers meetings between the public and researchers in more than 120 French cities and around a hundred countries. A perfect opportunity to interest young and old in the topics of basic and biomedical research surrounding the brain and the latest advances in this field!

Conference “Discovery of a vital hormone for our brain”
Date : March 9, 2024, 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m
Location : Château Saint-Antoine, 10 Boulevard Jules Sebastianelli 13011 Marseille
Summary: 100 years ago, a Canadian team discovered insulin, the hormone that regulates the amount of sugar in the body. It is vital for diabetics, whose numbers continue to increase worldwide. It is also necessary for the functioning of our neurons. This discovery was one of the most important in biomedical research of the 20th century. William Rostène, Emeritus Associate Research Director at INSERM, works at the Vision Institute in Paris. He specializes in neuroendocrinology, a discipline that studies the connections between the brain and hormones. One of his historical novels, Les Caprices du Nobel (ed. L’Harmattan), tells the story of this fascinating discovery. His latest novel, The Temples Returned, invites us to share the lives of researchers and pays tribute to those who contributed to the reputation of French research through their rescue during the Second World War.
Speaker: William Rostène, Emeritus Research Director INSERM, Vision Institute, Sorbonne University (Paris)

Bistrot Science “Can We Trust Our Brains?” Cognitive Bias and the Climate Crisis »
Date : Monday, March 11, 2024 – 7:00 p.m
Location : Artplexe Canebière – 125 La Canebière, 13001 Marseille (room on the 3rd floor near the escalator)
Speaker:
By Daniele SCHON, INSERM Research Director at the Institute of Neuroscience of Systems and the University of Aix-Marseille, and Manuel MERCIER, Research Engineer Insert at the Institute of Neuroscience of Systems and the University of Aix-Marseille
The science bistro is hosted by Serge ALONSO, honorary researcher of the CNRS, Marseille and other members of the Cerveau Point Comm association.
Conference “Let’s rack our brains”
Date : March 15, 2024, 12 p.m. – 2 p.m
Location : L’Hexagone – Aix-Marseille University, 163 Avenue de Luminy, 13009 Marseille
Summary: The meninges that surround the brain, long neglected, actually house large numbers of immune cells that are essential to our survival. Without it, the brain cannot develop properly and is also susceptible to certain infections. By focusing on the coverings of the brain rather than the brain itself, new perspectives open up in the fight against neurodevelopmental diseases such as autism and neuroinflammatory diseases.
Speaker: Rejane Rua, Inserm Research Fellow at the Marseille Luminy Immunology Center
Conference “The Biological Clock: Metronome of the Living”
Date : March 18, 2024, 2:30 p.m
Location : Auditorium of the Administrative Center (CADARASCUM), Place du Souvenir Français, 13130 Berre-l’Etang
Speaker: Anne-Marie François-Bellan, INSERM Research Fellow, Institute of Neurophysiopathology (Marseille)

Conference debate and workshop on the connection between science and art
Date : March 16, 2024, 2:00 p.m
Location : International Perfume Museum, Auditorium, 2 Boulevard du Jeu du Ballon, 06130 Grasse, France
Summary: The team of Dr. Michèle Studer, INSERM researcher – Institut de Biology Valrose (Université Côte d’Azur, CNRS, INSERM), welcomed an artist in residence, Liv Jourdan, from September to November 2023. The idea of this project is to promote the encounter between art and science.
As part of Brain Week, a debate meeting will be organized to discuss this collaboration between science and art.
From 3 p.m., a museum mediator will lead a workshop for 15 people in the mediation room, which is intended to establish the connection between science and art.
Speaker: Michèle Studer is a researcher at the Inserm-Institut de Biology Valrose (Université Côte d’Azur, CNRS, INSERM). For several years, Michèle Studer’s team has been interested in the cellular and molecular mechanisms that control the organization and circuits of the cerebral cortex – the outer layer of the brain, the seat of cognitive functions – in mammals.
Liv Joudan is an artist who graduated from Villa Arson in Nice.

Conference: “Understanding the normal and pathological aging of our brain”
Date : March 16, 2024, 10:00 a.m
Location : Raoul Mille Media Library, 33 Avenue Malaussena, 06000 Nice
Summary: Brain aging is a long process in which we witness a structural change in certain brain regions that suffer a loss of adaptation or compensation during this process. The aging of our brain is accelerated by neurodegenerative diseases, but also by so-called peripheral diseases such as type II diabetes, as well as by mental activity and lifestyle. Therefore, the influence of age on the aging of our brain varies from person to person. The aim of this seminar is to introduce you to some normal and pathological biological aspects of brain aging.
Speaker: Mounia Chami is a research fellow at the National Institute for Health and Medical Research (INSERM). She leads a team at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology (IPMC), affiliated to the CNRS and the University of Côte d’Azur. Dr. Mounia Chami studies the pathophysiological mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease.
