The bat is the main suspect in the Covid-19 pandemic and is causing fear. But as this amazing scientific research shows, the flying mammal is fascinating researchers trying to unlock the secrets of its iron health. Bats live in their millions in the Thai cave Khao Chong Phran, which is both a Buddhist temple and an observation site for researchers. Far from sharing the general disgust, they are passionate about these demonized creatures, who have also hit the headlines as prime suspects in the Covid-19 pandemic. They carry hundreds of viruses, some of which are transmissible to humans, and are suspected of being the cause of several diseases: Marburg fever, Ebola and not to forget several coronaviruses. But how does this mammal manage to resist infections? This persistence of evil fascinates many scientists.
This 2021 film by Raphaël Hitier is followed by a meeting with Anne Keriel Inserm researcher in infectious diseases at the Department of Bacterial Virulence and Chronic Infections in Nîmes (Inserm unit U1047).
